Stories live with your tree
Behind every name is a life lived, memories shared, and stories that deserve to be remembered and passed on
People, Stories & Heritage Wood
Every person remembered at Heritage Wood has lived a life full of moments — both large and small.
There are stories of love, laughter, service, friendship, resilience and kindness. Stories that shaped families, friendships and communities, and which continue to live on in those who remember.
A name on a plaque is deeply meaningful, but it is often only the beginning. Behind each name is a lifetime of memories: photographs tucked away in albums, favourite songs that still stir emotion, words spoken in letters or remembered voices, and stories shared around kitchen tables.
At Heritage Wood, we believe these stories matter.
Our woodland was created as a place of reflection and remembrance — somewhere families can return to, walk among the trees, and feel a continuing connection to those they hold dear. By offering gentle ways to share and preserve personal stories, we help ensure that memories are not lost to time, but passed on with care and respect.
Each story shared becomes part of the living landscape of Heritage Wood, rooted in the tree it accompanies and accessible to future generations. In this way, remembrance is not static, but something that continues to grow, just like the woodland itself
Stories on the Memorial Plaque Wall
Many people choose to remember a loved one at Heritage Wood by sponsoring a tree and placing a plaque beside it. This remains a meaningful and lasting way to create a place of remembrance within the woodland.
Alongside this, we now offer an additional way to share and preserve a person’s story — through a QR Story plaque on our memorial plaque wall.
A QR Story plaque allows family and friends to create a digital Story that can include written memories, photographs, spoken words, music and links to video or playlists. When the QR code on the plaque is scanned using a mobile phone, the Story can be viewed and shared, creating a richer and more personal record of a life remembered.
For some families, a plaque on the wall offers a meaningful alternative where sponsoring a tree is not right for them. For others, it provides a way to focus on the person’s story itself — allowing memories to be shared and added to over time, without the need for a tree.
Both options are held with the same care and respect at Heritage Wood. Whether remembrance is rooted in the woodland or shared through the memorial wall, each Story becomes part of a living record that can be visited, shared and passed on to future generations.
How the QR Code Works
Scanning a QR code is very simple and does not require any special apps.
Most modern mobile phones can scan a QR code just by using the camera:
Open the camera on your mobile phone
Hold it up to the QR plaque, just as if you were taking a photo
A small link will appear on the screen
Tap the link to open the Story page
The QR code will take you to a unique page created for that plaque. On this page you may see written memories, photographs, a spoken message, favourite music, or links shared by family and friends.
The Story page can be viewed while visiting Heritage Wood or later at home, and can be shared easily with loved ones who are unable to visit in person.
If you are unsure or need help, our team is always happy to assist.
How we create
Once you have selected your tree or chosen a QR Story plaque on the memorial wall, we will guide you gently through the next steps.
You will be invited to share the memories you would like included in the Story — this may be written words, photographs, spoken messages, favourite music, or links to meaningful videos. You will upload these to our website for our review.
Our team will carefully create the Story page using the information you provide, ensuring it is presented with sensitivity, clarity and care. Each Story is linked uniquely to its QR plaque, allowing family and friends to view it by scanning the plaque with a mobile phone when visiting Heritage Wood.
Once created, the Story becomes a living record that can be shared with loved ones, revisited over time, and added to in the future if you wish. In this way, remembrance is not fixed to a single moment, but allowed to grow — just as the woodland itself continues to grow and change.
Throughout the process, we are always here to help, answer questions, and support you in creating something that feels right for you and your family.
Try It for Yourself
Below is an example of a QR Story plaque.
If you have a mobile phone to hand, you can try scanning it now:
Open the camera on your mobile phone
Point it at the QR code shown on your screen
Tap the link that appears to view the Story
If you are unable to scan the code from your screen, you can also click this link to view the example Story page and see what to expect.
This example is provided simply to demonstrate how QR Stories work and how memories can be shared through words, photographs and other meaningful content.
QR Stories are offered as an optional addition.
If you choose to include a QR Story, the cost is an additional £50 on top of the standard cost of sponsoring a tree £330, purchasing a picnic table £330, replacing an existing plaque £70 or placing a plaque on the memorial wall £70 in Heritage Wood.
This helps cover the creation and care of the Story page, allowing memories to be shared thoughtfully and preserved for the future.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to create my QR Story?
Once you’ve uploaded your words, photographs and other content, it usually takes around one working week for us to create your Story page and send it to you for approval.
When will the plaque be in place?
Once you have approved your Story, your plaque will be added to the following week’s plaque list.
Depending on the day approval is given, plaques are typically in place within 3–10 days.
Please note: once your Story has been approved and the plaque ordered, any further changes will be classed as a Story update.
Is there a limit to how many words I can add?
No.
There is no word limit — you are free to write as little or as much as feels right for your Story.
Is there a limit to the number of photos I can add?
Our system allows you to upload up to 20 images as part of your submission.
If you have more photographs you would like to include, please get in touch with us and we’ll be happy to help.
What file sizes can I upload?
Images and audio files can be uploaded up to a maximum size of 10MB per file.
We do not accept direct video file uploads.
If you would like to include video, please upload it to YouTube or Vimeo and share the link with us instead.
You are also welcome to include Spotify playlists or music links as part of your Story.
What about copyright and music?
Anything uploaded as part of a QR Story must be content that the person submitting it owns or has permission to use.
For music, we recommend sharing links to platforms such as Spotify or YouTube, rather than uploading music files directly. This allows favourite songs to be included while respecting copyright.
What happens to existing plaques?
Nothing at all.
Standard plaques remain available, and no existing plaque will be replaced unless this is specifically requested by the sponsor.
QR plaques are an optional addition, not a replacement.
Who can view the QR Stories?
Anyone visiting Heritage Wood will be able to scan a QR plaque and view the associated Story.
Please bear this in mind when choosing what information to share, and avoid including sensitive personal details.
Can stories be updated in the future?
Yes. Stories can be updated after the initial creation.
Future updates are available for a fixed cost of £40 per update.
What if I’m not confident with technology?
That’s absolutely fine.
If you need help uploading your content or would prefer to talk things through, our team is always happy to help.
Can family members contribute?
Yes. Families often work together to gather words, photographs and memories before submitting them as one Story.
What if I don’t have photos or audio?
That’s completely fine.
A QR Story can be created using words alone, or any combination of content that feels right to you.
