John West

Fisherman of Port Isaac, Cornwall

15 March 1951 – 3 January 2026

A life anchored by the sea, and made rich by family.

John was a fisherman through and through — steady hands, a kind heart, and a quiet humour that could lift anyone’s spirits. Port Isaac wasn’t just where he worked; it was where he belonged. He knew every change in the weather by feel, and every knot by memory.

But more than anything, John loved his people. He loved coming home, muddy boots by the door, and stepping into his garden to see what had grown while he was out at sea. He loved the sound of laughter in the house — especially when the grandchildren were visiting — and he never missed a chance to make them smile.

A message from Carol (wife)

From Carol

My John… you were my calm in every storm.
You were never one for fuss, but you gave your love in a hundred quiet ways — a warm cup of tea put in my hands, a squeeze of the shoulder as you passed by, the way you always made sure the doors were locked at night.

I will miss your boots by the back step, and the way you’d stand in the garden with your hands on your hips, deciding what needed doing next. I’ll miss your stories — the ones you told a hundred times and somehow made new each time.

Thank you for a lifetime of love. I’ll carry you with me, always.

A message from Elizabeth (daughter)

From Elizabeth

Dad, you taught me what it means to be strong without being hard.
You showed me that you don’t need big words to be deeply loved — you just need to be there, again and again, the way you always were.

I’ll remember the smell of salt and engine oil when you came home, and the way your face lit up when the grandchildren ran to you. You were their safe place, their storyteller, their biggest fan.

You were proud of your life, your family, and your little patch of garden — and we were proud of you.

Sleep peacefully, Dad. We’ll keep your memory close.

Elizabeth
